Shopping Tips for Dorms

Hey everyone! Like many of you reading this, I'm an incoming college freshman. As soon as I decided to go to school away from home, I started thinking of things I needed to buy for my dorm room. This can be really stressful, because you might not think of certain things or forget something really important. I'm gonna give you some tips on how I made the perfect list for myself and how I got prepared for dorm room shopping!

1. Don't go shopping alone. Obviously most people will go with their parents, but if you were thinking of shopping for organizational/cleaning/misc. room items alone- don't. You can get distracted because of things you "want" and forget about necessary things like an outlet power strip or stick-on hooks to hang towels.
Your mom can be a great help because she's been cleaning and organizing her home for years. My mom got a lot of things I would have never thought of because I was focusing on the "pretty" things (comforter, sheets, decorations) Dads can be great help too, and even a friend who is also going away to school.

2. Find a good shopping list. I found one online, and I will post the link at the end of the blog. Basically it's a super super long alphabetical list of pretty much everything you would ever use in college. I copied and pasted the list into my computer and deleted everything I'd never need, and voila- customized list for me. I had to add a couple of things, but pretty much everything is there for you and its a huge life saver to have a list when you go shopping. Target also provides you with a checklist in their stores, so you can try that too.

3. Go on youtube! Watching dorm room tours and dorm hauls can help you get ideas too. I spent a lot of time searching for dorm tours to see what people had so i didn't forget anything. It helps you see how people keep themselves organized so you know what you might want to get.

4. Don't get sucked in to all the cute stuff at expensive stores. I found the most gorgeous comforter set, sheets, desktop organizers and such all at Walmart, Target, Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Marshalls. In fact, those 4 stores are the only places I went for dorm stuff. It's a one-stop shop (or 4, but you could probably find everything at one place) where you can get everything for a great price. Keep your eyes peeled for coupons they send in the mail too!

Basically, google around and try to get a good feel for what you will need and try to go shopping with someone that can help you get good products to clean and organize with. Don't go to the store without a list or you might end up feeling overwhelmed, as there is a lot to look for.

Good luck!
-Nadine :)
