How to deal with moving away from your friends

Hey everyone!

This blog post is for all of you who have just finished high school and are now going off to College or are moving away in general.

It was definitely a very good feeling to finish school for me but then a few days after it hit me that now me and my friends would all move to different places and that our lives would take different directions now. It's very hard to suddenly not have your friends around you anymore because you are used to being with them everyday and not just in the fun times but also in sad moments.

Here are a few tips for you that will hopefully help you (and me as well!)

1. Spend as much time together as you can before everyone leaves!

You could argue be cleverer to spend not too much time together anymore so you can get used to being apart, but honestly, I think you should use the time you have and it will get easier if you talk to them about it.

2. Make sure you can stay in touch as much as you can.

If one of your friends doesn't have a facebook account or skype, annoy them until they get one! It's just a lot more easier to stay in touch than only over the phone.

Here are some arguments you could give them:

- it's cheaper than texting or calling

- you can post pictures on there, post music and thoughts and so you always now what's new in your friends life and what they are up to

- you can write massive messages on there and chat!

3. Throw a Goodbye party

Even if it's sad, celebrate it! A new and very important and exciting chapter of your life is beginning. It doesn't have to be a huge, fancy party, you could also just invite your friends over for a barbecue.

4. Give Goodbye presents

It doesn't have to be something expensive. Just a letter thanking them for everything, telling them how much they mean to you and that you are going to miss them will mean a lot. A great idea is also a friendship photo book, just buy one and fill them up with some pictures that you have taken over the years and write little notes. My best friend made me a calendar, with a picture and note for every month! :)

5. Once your gone, write letters and send packages from time to time!

As great as the internet is, a handwritten letter or a package with little presents or pictures are a lot more personal and special than a mail. No matter how wonderful you get along with your friends, in my opinion you have to work on every relationship or friendship. So by sending letters or packages you are showing them how much you care and that they are worth it to spend time and effort on them.

5. Arrange visits

Of course the best thing is to finally be able to see and hug each other again so make sure you try to plan your visits home at a time that is possible for them aswell.

6. Don't worry, be happy!

It's not the end of the world. You will find great friends in college/university aswell and you are not out of the world!

Here's a song that always makes me happy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=9zdNdjF-htY
